Japan's Economy Declines as Overseas Sales Suffer by US Tariffs
The Japanese economic system has recorded a contraction for the first time in six quarters, largely caused by declining exports because of recent US tariffs.
G7 Growth Standings
The Japanese economy stands as the initial Group of Seven nation to disclose an output shrinkage in the previous quarter.
As the US still needing to release its gross domestic product data for Q3 2025, the present G7 economic rankings indicate:
- France: +0.5% expansion
- UK: 0.1 percent
- Canadian economy: 0.1 percent (provisional estimate)
- Germany: zero growth
- Italy: 0%
- Japanese economy: -0.4%
Tourism Stocks Decline amid Political Rift with China
Alongside the economic contraction, Japan is dealing with an escalating political conflict with China regarding Taiwan.
Shares in Japan's tourism and consumer businesses have dropped noticeably after China recommended its residents to refrain from visiting to Japan.
This decision by Beijing heightened a political dispute that was initiated by comments from Tokyo's new PM about the potential of deploying forces in the case of a potential Chinese attack on Taiwan.
The development triggered a surge of selling across Japanese leisure stocks.
- Oriental Land shares fell by 5.7%
- Isetan Mitsukoshi plummeted by 11.3 percent
- Japan Airlines declined by 3.75%
"The ongoing tension over Taiwan and Beijing's advisory advising against visits to Japan creates near-term difficulties for retail and hospitality sectors.
"Tourists from China represent roughly 25 percent of Japan's inbound traffic, making department stores, high-end shopping, and tourism services especially vulnerable."
Economic Decline Details
Japanese gross domestic product declined by 0.4% in the third quarter, as manufacturers' exports were affected by tariffs imposed by the US recently.
Exports were a major driver of the contraction, falling by 1.2 percent compared with the April-June quarter, and were 4.5 percent lower than a year ago.
Previously, the American government had threatened Japan with a new 25% tariff on its products, which was later lowered to 15 percent when the two countries reached a trade agreement.
Consumer spending also declined, by 0.3% quarter-on-quarter.
On an annual basis, Japan's real gross domestic product contracted by 1.8 percent in the quarter through September.
"Japan's economy was stable in the initial six months of this year and the latest GDP figures showed that momentum is paused temporarily.
I expect Japan's economy to be back on a gradual growth trend going forward."
The US administration has lately recognized the impact of tariffs on Americans, lowering tariffs on food imports including meat, produce, beverages and bananas amid growing concerns about rising costs.
